Normal Lens vs. Cloudy Lens
Normal Lens vs Cloudy Lens

What is a cataract?

Inside the human eye is a lens. In most cases, a person is born with a clear lens in each eye. With the passage of time, the lens becomes yellow and cloudy. This normal aging change is the process of becoming a cataract. It takes many years. Therefore, cataracts become more common as we get older. In some scientific studies, 50% of people aged 65 to 74 had cataracts present or had already had cataract surgery. This number becomes 70% in people 75 and older.

Symptoms of a cataract:

When the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, it makes it difficult to see. Many patients also note that headlights from oncoming traffic creates glare and difficulty driving. Occasionally, a cataract can induce special types of glaucoma.

What is the treatment for cataracts?

There are no known medications which will take away cataracts. Surgery is the option many people choose when their vision begins to make normal tasks such as reading or driving difficult.
